Classics FC got it right first time against Sliema Futsal at Ghajn Dwieli. In what was Stephen Mallia’s and his assistant David Camilleri’s coaching debut, Classics showed guile and discipline to triumph 4-2 against their more quoted opponents.
The match got off to a quiet start with Sliema peppering the Classics goal early on with long-range shots that keeper Chris Magri saved. However, 10 minutes into the half, the deadlock was broken rather fortuitously, when a Sliema player deflected a Classics’ corner into his own net. A couple of minutes later, Classics grabbed their second goal of the match when Aaron Caruana – another newcomer this season - turned a Patrick Azzopardi corner in off the underside of the crossbar. The match would continue in much the same vein of a solid Classics’ defence soaking up wave after wave of Sliema attacks till a few minutes before half-time, when Sliema won a penalty after Azzopardi had brought down an opponent inside the box. However, much to Sliema’s dismay, Classics’ custodian Magri pulled off a classy save to preserve his side’s two-goal cushion heading into half-time. Minutes into the second half, Sliema winger Nello Bonnici scored a wonder-goal from an acute angle to claw Sliema back into contention. Their joy was however short-lived, as not long after Caruana grabbed his second to restore his side’s two-goal lead with a classy finish. The match was wide open at this point, and Sliema’s Bonnici scored straight from the kick-off to set up a nervy finish. Yet, with minutes to go, Classics’ captain Azzopardi scored his side’s fourth goal to effectively seal the contest. Caruana, scorer of two goals on his debut, would leave the pitch injured with one of the last notable actions of the match, after a gutsy and highly satisfactory debut. The referee’s final whistle brought a mini-pitch invasion from Classics’ players and supporters, overjoyed at their side’s performance and the three points. Classics will look to continue their early season form in the second match of the season when they take on familiar foes New Team FC at Ghajn Dwieli on November 6th, 2009. |
