Classics succumb to second defeat of the season Print E-mail

On Friday, Classics FC fell to their second defeat of the season in their final match of the first round against Todos FC.  The top-of-the-table clash saw an on-form Classics side try to end Todos’ fine run of 3 wins and 3 draws in 6 matches. The match got off to a cagey start with both teams showing respectful caution, patiently trying to prise open each other’s defences.  However, midway through the first half, a R. Mifsud strike, followed moments later by a long-range C. Brincat effort, left Classics reeling and in disarray.  Following stern words from coach S. Mallia in a time-out, Classics FC began to show more guile and craft, and moments before half-time, halved the deficit through a well-taken A. Caruana goal.
Classics FC came out of the blocks flying in the second half and within minutes of the interval, had restored parity through M. Muscat’s fifth goal of the season.  The momentum was with Classics FC at this point, but luck deserted them when Todos won a penalty following a fluid counter-attack.  This was duly converted by Brincat to restore his side’s lead.  Despite Classics’ best efforts, they were denied by a spirited Todos defence and fell further behind when Brincat scored his side’s fourth goal following a fine solo run.  Classics refused to give up however, and were rewarded for their endeavours when Muscat scored his side’s third goal of the day to reduce the deficit again.
Yet, it proved to be too little too late for Classics as they succumbed to their second defeat of the round.  They will look to put this defeat behind them and continue the season’s sterling work on the 5th February against Sliema Futsal in the first match of the second round.
