Déjà-vu as Classics FC lose promotion play-off PDF Print E-mail

There was a sense of déjà-vu on Monday night when Classics FC were two goals up but lost 5-3 against Riviera FC to lose another chance to be promoted. This brought back unwanted memories of the 2005/06 season when Classics FC, in their first futsal season, lost another promotion opportunity against RMF Wolves when they succumbewd to a similar 5-3 defeat, again after being two goals ahead at half time.

The game, which similarly to the unpleasant precedent was also being played at Zabbar, saw Classics FC taking the game to their opponents and coming close to open the score straight from the kick-off. The opener came a few minutes later, when a well taken free kick by M. Muscat found G. Galea unmarked on the second post. Classics FC kept piling the pressure, coming agonisingly close with shots from M. Muscat, P. Azzopardi and T. Fenech. Fenech finally doubled the score for Classics FC with a top-corner shot after a good run.

With Riviera having committed already five fouls within the first ten minutes of the game, Classics FC surged forward to seal the game, but a counter-attack led to Riviera closing the gap. Seconds later, the game was back on equal terms as a long distance shot was partially saved by Classics’ keeper C.Magri, but the ball slipped onto the post and rebounded back off the keeper for the 2-2. At half time, Riviera FC had proven why they had the best attack in the whole third division and seemed galvanised with their comeback, while Classics FC were left to rue their missed chances.

The second half was a tight affair, with both teams seemingly more concerned not to concede any goals. However, it was a Classics FC error at the back which led to Riviera surging ahead for the first time in the match. This advantage was short-lived as N. Farrugia Cann immediately equalised for Classics FC straight from a direct free-kick. This goal gave added vigour to Classics FC, who went close to seal the match with shots from T. Fenech. However, in the last minute of the game, with the game heading for extra-time, Classics FC conceded a corner and Riviera FC were quick to capitalise on loose marking at the back. The goal signalled the end of a season-long dream for the Classics FC players, who at this stage were in despair and conceded the fatal fifth goal.

Riviera FC will next play Division II side Southenders to attempt to steal a place in the second division. Classics FC will now focus on the Knock Out to try to reach the semi-final stage for the first time in their history.
