The top two teams in Division III’s Section B faced each other last Friday at the Ghajn Dwieli pitch in what turned out to be a great result for Classics FC.

Classics FC got off to a lively start when M. Muscat registered his third goal of the season with a shot from the edge of the box following fine work by N. Farrugia. Some stubborn defending and good work in goal from C. Magri allowed the team to keep the 1-0 till half time. Mellieha, however, were quick to respond in the second half when they equalised with a fine individual move and a well-taken shot.

New signing T. Fenech restored the precious lead a few minutes later when he latched on to another N. Farrugia assist and volleyed the ball home to score his first goal for the squad. With a few minutes remaining, Mellieha reversed all their hopes in attack but Classics FC could have added another goal at the end through a counter-attack move.

Classics FC are now sole leaders with 12 points from 4 games. Their next game is on Friday January 8, 2010 when, at the Ghajn Dwieli pitch, they will face St Helen Band Club. Both teams met in last year’s league, with the ties in both the first and second round ending in a draw. Click here to view the full standings.
