Classics drop points but maintain promotion chase
20 January 2011

Classics FC ended their game against Red Marleys on Tuesday night level on 1-1, thereby losing an opportunity to go back to the top of the table. The battle for promotion is heating up, with eight teams closely fighting for the first three table spots.

Following a run of six successive wins between league and Knock Out commitments, Classics FC started the game where they left off in previous games and pressed their opponents to take control of the game. After a couple of chances, Classics FC managed to forge ahead thanks to Yau Mun Law’s fourth goal of the season, following neat passing from Gabriel Galea and Lee Ellis. The latter could have doubled the team’s lead on two one-against-one situations with the keeper, with one going wide and the other saved.
Remembering they had beaten Classics FC twice last season, Red Marleys came out in the second half aggressively and piled attack after attack, hitting the post on one particular occasion. Magri in goal and Law in the heart of the defence had an impeccable performance for the team, who also had David Shead to thank for a goal line clearance. However, Red Marleys were rightly awarded for their efforts, equalising from a shot which was slightly deflected by Classics defenders. In the dying minutes of the game, good scoring chances were registered on both ends. Classics FC could have gone ahead on three occasions, one from another Lee one-to-one situation with the keeper, and two close shots by Gabriel Galea and Marco Muscat. A very balanced match where the 3 points could have gone either way thus ended in a draw.
Classics will now have a break from league commitments, with the next game scheduled at the end of February. In the meantime, on Tuesday, January  25th Classics FC will be playing against Division 1 leaders River Plate Bidnija Futsal Club in the second round of the Knock Out Competition. The game kicks off at 9.30pm.
