Spirited performance not enough
14 March 2011

Following a dismal performance and disappointing result against Paola Stars, Classics FC needed to reignite promotion dreams on Friday night when they played relegation-troubled AC Trampi. However, a spirited performance was not enough as the team ended on the losing side by the odd goal in three.

The team’s initial formation included C. Magri in goal, D. Mifsud making his debut at the heart of the defence, C. Meilak and M. Muscat as wingers, and J. Darmanin as pivot. The game seemed to stalling in a deadlock until AC Trampi opened the scoring midway through the first phase when an unfortunate deflection off a harmless pass left Magri stranded in goal.

This mishap dealt a deadly blow to the team, who fought hard and kept possession for the remaining minutes of the first half and most of the second half but found it difficult to be decisive up front, only coming very close when A. Briffa hit the woodwork. Then, against the run of play, Trampi scored their second goal from a counter attack move.

Classics FC managed to pull one back a minute from time when J. Darmanin scored his first goal of the season with a powerful shot from an indirect freekick. Seconds later, M. Muscat went agonizingly close to securing the draw but his shot hit the side netting.

The next game will be played in a month’s time against Fugazi. This game, however, will now be decisive as Classics FC need to secure the three points if they are to maintain any playoff aspirations alive.
