Disappointing season debut for Classics
09 October 2011

Classics FC will be looking to learn from the mistakes committed in their curtain raiser if they are to enjoy a successful campaign after succumbing to defeat by the odd goal in seven against Fugazi 5 in their first match of the 2011/12 season.

Classics started the game well, gaining ground on the opposition and creating chances from early on. It was nevertheless Fugazi who took the lead when their keeper parried a shot by Azzopardi - who had dribbled past a defender to fire towards goal from the left side - and started a swift counter attack which the Fugazi forwards managed to convert. With Classics fumbling in their reaction, Fugazi doubled their lead with yet another counter attack through which they caught the Classics’ defenders off guard to end the first half with a 2-0 scoreline.

The start of the second half did not bring any better luck to Classics, as it was indeed Fugazi who found the net yet again from a well taken corner kick. This finally prompted a reaction from Classics who were awarded a penalty after a Fugazi defender cleared the ball of the line with his hands. Controversy ensued, as the referee failed to dismiss the player but only showed him a yellow card despite the clear chance that Classics were denied by the irregularity. Law eventually stepped up on the spot, but his shot went wide. Classics kept the pressure on and J.Darmanin finally managed to pull a goal back with a precise left foot shot following an Azzopardi assist. They then hit the woodwork twice before scoring a second goal after a fine turn by Azzopardi who hammered the ball into the net. Classics pushed in numbers to equalise, but their efforts were severely dented when Fugazi intercepted a pass and once again punished Classics on the counter attack when they converted an advantageous situation with two players against the keeper. Shortly after, Muscat stole possession and crossed a low ball toward Azzopardi who comfortably slotted the ball in goal, but it was not long before the final whistle signaled the end of the match.

With the match thus ending with a disappointing final score of 3-4, Classics FC will be looking to avoid repeating the same mistakes when they face Paola Stars in their second game of the season on October 27, 2011.
